The FINEST FORUM#1 on June 11th, 2025 is dedicated to the theme “Beyond Recycling” and aims to gather experts from industry, academia, administration and politics for an intense exchange on ways to follow the path to a more sustainable circular economy for fine-grained residual material streams.

Three keynote speeches held by Nora Griefahn (Cradle-to-Cradle), Britta Bookhagen (DERA) and Henning Wilts (Wuppertal-Institut) will introduce to various aspects of circular economy in the morning. Afterwards these three renowned experts will discuss their perspectives intensively in a panel discussion including statements and questions from the audience as well.

In the afternoon the focus will be rather on transfer. Thies Johansson from TU Berlin will give an impulse speech on transfer and transformation followed by statements from industry and science. The subsequent panel discussion will deal with the question, how circular economy innovations meet reality.

The project FINEST funded by the Helmholtz Association in the framework of the Helmholtz Sustainability Challenge deals with innovative approaches for fine-grained waste streams of anthropogenic origin such as flue ash, microplastic, shredder fines, etc. Four Helmholtz Centers (HZB, HZDR, KIT, UFZ) and two universities (TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Universität Greifwald) have joined forces to develop technologies for these residuals of fine particles that still pose challenges to utilization and safe disposal.
