HZDR scientist appointed honorary professor at TU Dresden

Dr. Guido Juckeland, head of the Computational Science Department at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), has been appointed honorary professor at the Faculty of Computer Science at TU Dresden. He will be responsible for teaching the subject of “Research Software Engineering.” On June 3, 2025, he received his appointment certificate from the Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science, Prof. Christine Baier.

Juckeland has been teaching at TU Dresden since 2023. His course “Introduction to Research Software Engineering” is so popular with students that the Faculty of Computer Science wanted to intensify the collaboration and nominated him for an honorary professorship.

The Scientific Director of the HZDR, Prof. Sebastian M. Schmidt, congratulates Guido Juckeland on this career step: “This honorary professorship at TU Dresden is not only a success for our employee, but also opens up new opportunities for the further scientific orientation of the Department of Information Services and Computing at the HZDR.”

Uwe Aßmann, Professor of Software Technology at the Faculty of Computer Science, emphasizes: "Software packages that originate from research are playing an increasingly important role in subsequent research work and industrial applications. Research work gives rise to complex software platforms, which are then maintained in an open-source community and ultimately also made available in commercial versions. Research into the success criteria of this new type of software development is called Research Software Engineering (RSE). RSE is an important addition to the German and European software scene in particular. We are delighted to have gained Dr. Juckeland, an expert in this field, for teaching."

Juckeland will offer two courses starting immediately: in the summer semester, the course “Introduction to Research Software Engineering”, which includes lectures and exercises as well as a separate internship, and in the winter semester, together with Prof. Wolfgang E. Nagel, the course “Highly Parallel Programming of GPUs” with lectures and exercises. These courses are primarily aimed at students in the master's program “Computational Modeling and Simulation”, but are ultimately open to all interested students in the Computer Science Department as elective courses.

Juckeland, who himself studied at the Faculty of Computer Science at TU Dresden from 2000 to 2005, is delighted to be more closely connected to his alma mater again thanks to the honorary professorship: "The honorary professorship now makes it even easier for me to officially and permanently contribute our wealth of experience at HZDR in dealing with research software to the education at TU Dresden. This expertise has a high profile both nationally and internationally."

After graduating with a degree in information systems engineering, Juckeland worked as a research assistant at the Center for Information Services and High-Performance Computing (ZIH) at TU Dresden. He received his doctorate in 2013 and joined the HZDR in 2016 as head of the newly founded Computational Science department. He has remained in contact with the Faculty of Computer Science and has supervised selected courses. He believes that all sides will benefit from his honorary professorship: “Students are confronted with real scientific questions and applications at an early stage, and the HZDR can attract young scientists.” The honorary professorship, which is initially limited until 2029, will further deepen the close cooperation.
