Georgian students complete exchange program as part of the Georgian-German Science Bridge

Seventeen students from Georgia visited the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) last week as part of the Georgian-German Science Bridge (GGSB). The program, which ran until August 23, gave the students a unique opportunity to participate in the QUALI Start-Up Lectures conducted by senior scientists from HZDR, Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ), and the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research.

The lectures provided training in a wide range of research fields, including particle physics, medical imaging, engineering, and artificial intelligence. Alongside theoretical insights, the program also featured practical exercises designed to prepare students for the demands of international research.

During their stay in Dresden, the students also explored HZDR’s institutes and large-scale research facilities, such as OncoRay – National Center for Radiation Research in Oncology. They were introduced to the academic and scientific requirements needed to pursue a successful PhD at HZDR or other leading research institutions in Germany.

Prof. Sebastian M. Schmidt, Scientific Director at HZDR, emphasized the importance of the exchange: “This exchange with our Georgian partners is a wonderful experience for us. It’s not just about science – it’s about getting to know each other, sharing ideas, and building friendships that can last well beyond this program. When we bring together different perspectives, knowledge, and talents, we all grow and inspire each other. That’s what makes collaborations like this so valuable.”

About the Georgian-German Science Bridge:

The Georgian-German Science Bridge (GGSB) was founded more than 20 years ago as a platform for cooperation between Georgian universities and German research centers within the Helmholtz Association. Its mission is to foster collaboration between scientists and to support students through joint projects, education, and exchange programs. Today, the GGSB continues to play a vital role in strengthening scientific ties between Germany and Eastern Europe, promoting innovation and shared knowledge across borders.
