Travel Grant – Funding by the HZDR Friends’ Association
The funding grant is provided by the HZDR Friends’ Association (Förderverein) and supports active participation in scientific events, thereby strengthening exchange, visibility, and networking.
Who can apply?
- Doctoral researchers
- Postdocs
- Master’s/Diploma students
Requirements:
1. existing HZDR affiliation
2. in a qualification phase
3. only one funding per year
What is funded?
Scientific activties
- conference
- summer school
- lab visit
- research stay
- comparable format of scientific exchange
Costs
- travel expenses (e.g., flights, train tickets, local transport, other necessary transportation costs)
- accommodation costs
- participation fees or similar expenses
Notes:
The funding is intended for exceptional cases when costs are not sufficiently covered by other funding sources. The grant covers up to
50 % of the costs, with a maximum of € 600 per scientific activity.
Only costs incurred by the applicant that are not covered by the applicant’s institute or other funding sources are eligible for funding.
How does the application process work?
Application periods
May 1 – June 14, 2026 (for scientific activities from July to December 2026)
November 1 – November 30, 2026 (for scientific activities from January to June 2027)
Applications who have previously been rejected may reapply in the next round for a different scientific activity.

What is not funded?
- online events
- training courses/further education
- lump sums
- daily allowances (per diems)
- scientific activities that have already taken place
- costs already covered by the institute/HZDR (must still be listed in the application)
What has to be considered during and after the scientific activity?
- In relevant publications and conference contributions (e.g., presentations, posters), the financial support of the HZDR Friends' Association must be acknowledged, i.e., by explicitly mentioning it and/or including the HZDR Friends' Association logo.
- Within 4 weeks after the end of the scientific activity, a cost statement (including invoices, tickets) and a final report (max. 900 characters, stating objectives, results, impact, and including a photo of the activity, e.g., the funded person next to a poster) must be submitted to foerderverein@hzdr.de, with careercenter@hzdr.de in cc. Proof of participation (e.g., email confirmation or certificate) from the host institution or event organizer must also be attached.
