Research

Our research mission at the department of High-field THz-driven phenomena is to explore elementary nonlinear interactions of intense, short THz pulses with matter on all relevant time and length scales. THz radiation strongly interacts with the low-energy quanta in matter, e.g. lattice vibrations, rotations, spins, and the transient THz electric fields act as contact free, ultrashort bias voltage, capable of strongly accelerating quasi-free charges. Among the elementary processes driven by the THz pulses are collective interactions – quasiparticles –  such as phonons, magnons, plasmons, or the Higgs modes in superconductors. These both resonant and non-resonant processes are triggered in the electronic ground state, so that the sample response is not masked by electronic excitations.

This page provides an overview of the subjects that we focus on in our in-house research, which is part of the Helmholtz Research Program From Matter to materials and Life in the research field Matter.
