HIF researchers strengthen international partnerships through appointments

Three researchers of the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF) at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) have been appointed to prestigious positions at leading international universities, further strengthening long-term scientific collaboration and advancing joint research in artificial intelligence (AI), remote sensing, computer vision, and critical raw materials (CRM) exploration.
Prof. Dr. Richard Gloaguen appointed visiting professor at the University of the Witwatersrand
Prof. Richard Gloaguen is visiting professor at the School of Geosciences of the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa for the period 1 June 2026 to 31 May 2028.
He will advise the School of Geosciences on topics related to remote sensing and computer vision. His appointment will further enhance the partnership between Wits and HIF, with a particular focus on expanding collaborative research and innovation in CRM exploration.
Dr. René Booysen appointed visiting researcher at the University of the Witwatersrand
As well at the School of Geosciences of the University of the Witwatersrand Dr. René Booysen is a visiting researcher for the period 1 June 2026 to 31 May 2029.
Her responsibilities include supporting the supervision of students and contributing to the teaching of remote sensing courses. The appointment is intended to strengthen the collaboration between Wits and HIF and to foster new research projects focused on critical raw materials (CRM) exploration.
Prof. Dr. Pedram Ghamisi appointed research professor at the University of Iceland
Prof. Pedram Ghamisi has been appointed research professor at the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Iceland, for the period 20 June 2026 to 19 May 2031.
He will conduct research in artificial intelligence, computer vision, and Earth observation, while supporting student supervision and academic exchange. He will also contribute to the development of joint research proposals, promote responsible AI and open science initiatives.
These appointments reflect HZDR's continued commitment to fostering international scientific partnerships, promoting knowledge exchange, and addressing global challenges through collaborative research and education.
