recomine: Field Laboratory Davidschacht

The centuries-long history of mining and metallurgy in the Ore Mountains makes the region an ideal model location for setting up resource-oriented environmental technologies in pilot and demonstration plants and developing them for the market worldwide. For this purpose, five field laboratories will be set up in the recomine-alliance. One of them is the Rising Dump Davidschacht in Freiberg.

Flexible Processing for the Future: FlexiPlant

One of the challenges confronting our society today is the sustainable use of our resources. The concept of a circular economy, in which products, materials and componen­ts are reused and recycled within a loop, thus generating hardly any waste, is intended to meet this challenge. In order to reco­ver raw materials of all kinds (e.g. rare earth elements) in an energy-efficient and function-preserving way, it is necessary to develop a new generation of adaptive and flexible ­techno­logies and digital platforms for the processing and recycling. FlexiPlant will be a globally unique research infrastructure, to develop and test scientific models, methods and ­techno­logies for the mechanical processing of raw material in a pilot scale. The digitalization and automation of the processing system are required for transferring the processes to industrial scale. As an open transfer platform, FlexiPlant will provide a variety of research and cooperation opportunities for interested partners from academia, industry and society.

Documentary on responsible mining in the EU

In this documentary Peter Tom Jones (Director KU Leuven Institute for Sustainable Metals and Minerals) searches for answers to Europe’s ambiguous relationship with primary mining of energy-transition metals. The documentary wants to trigger a more-informed debate about the three-pronged strategy of the European Commission in terms of raw materials for the climate transition and related planetary problems, i.e. (1) more and better recycling, (2) responsible sourcing from outside Europe; (3) responsible mining in Europe.

The documentary was made within the SULTAN project, in which the HIF is also involved.

Resources for Germany's future

A film team from Spotlight Mining visited the Freiberg region and its stakeholders in connection with the Silver City project of Excellon Resources (Saxony Silver). The film features the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology as a partner of the project and its activities related to the project. Learn more about the exceptional mining history in the Freiberg area and the future potential of the region as a global silver producer.

recomine Image Movie (Video in German)

recomine is an innovative technology platform for mining residues that combines the removal of environmental pollutants with the recovery of finely distributed raw materials. It is being run by a broad alliance of research, industry and society in the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountain) region. Many mining sites worldwide have comparable challenges, newly developed solutions are therefore tested in the region, further developed and then offered on the world market.

More efficient mineral mapping for rare earth elements

Over three years, our scientists and their German and European partners have developed an integrated spectroscopy sensor system for laser-induced fluorescence and hyperspectral imaging within the project InSPECtor. It is used for a more efficient mineral mapping of drill-cores with high spatial resolution and a rapid detection of rare earth elements.

The 2D3Dscopy project

The world is 3D, but the characterisation of raw materials has so far been limited to 2D, only. The 2D3Dscopy project is going to change that by developing a unique technique for the raw materials sector that combines 2D analyses and 3D image data. In this EIT RawMaterials funded project, HIF cooperates with Ghent University, the companies Tescan XRE and Metso Outotecand is funded by EIT Raw Materials..

The AFK project (Video in German)

Together with partners from all over Europe, HIF has developed a new process that combines state-of-the-art raw material analyses, process prediction and improved processing methods to extract mineral and metal-bearing raw materials from complex ore deposits.

The ResErVar project (Video in German)

Decreasing ore grades, increasing mining depths and rising production costs put an end to the traditional mining of metallic raw materials in Germany in the beginning of the 1990s. But which resource potentials does Germany still have? The "ResErVar" project developed comprehensive models of the geological formation and distribution of deposits in order to explore this question. At the start of the project coordinated by the HIF, the MDR-Sachsenspiegel reported from the visitor mine in Pöhla/ Erzgebirge.
