Looking back at Helmholtz Alliances coordinated by the HZDR
Helmholtz Alliances bring together universities, Helmholtz Centers and other non-university research institutions to work on collaborative research projects. Research partners from abroad and companies can also be included. Helmholtz Alliances have their own management structure and develop concepts specifically designed to promote young talents and equal opportunity. Their objective: to identify important new research topics quickly and to address these with the requisite resources.
HZDR had been coordinating the Helmholtz Alliance LIMTECH (Liquid Metal Technologies) until October 2017. In December 2015, the Helmholtz Energy Alliance "Energy Efficient Multiphase Processes" was finalized.
The LIMTECH Alliance pursues the objective of researching and continuing the development of liquid metal technologies for a broad spectrum of applications. LIMTECH is scheduled for a period of five years and has an overall investment volume of 20 million euros. The financial means are split equally between the Helmholtz Association’s Initiative and Networking Fund, on the one hand, and the participating Helmholtz centers and partners, on the other hand. A program for doctoral candidates is to be established within the scope of the Alliance. Another focus is on the close cooperation with partners from industry so that the research results are implemented technologically in a timely manner.

The Helmholtz Energy Alliance „Energy Efficient Multiphase Processes“ carried out research and development for new process technologies in multiphase reaction engineering, targeting on an optimal process control and therefore reduced energy demand. New structured reactor concepts from micro-reactors to large-scale chemical reactors were hereby in the focus.
