Work and environmental safety and research go hand in hand

Anyone working in a laboratory in research and industry also deals with chemicals and other hazardous substances. To avoid risky situations, employees receive regular training. The Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology, which is part of Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, together with the laboratory equipment manufacturer VWR International, is organizing an in-house exhibition on the subject of work and environmental safety on Tuesday, 22.1.2019.

About 80 participants from the HIF, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, the UVR-FIA GmbH and the VKTA - Verein für Strahlenschutz, Analytik und Entsorgung Rossendorf e.V. have registered for the event. In specialist lectures, they can find out about the safe handling and disposal of critical substances and how to avoid fires. Afterwards, everyone has the opportunity to talk to the experts from asecos GmbH and FNE Entsorgungsdienste Freiberg GmbH.

 "Handling hazardous substances and waste requires very careful action and constant adherence to strict guidelines. The aim is to create optimum safety conditions for people and the environment. We are very pleased about the great interest in this topic," says Maja Klöden from HIF, who played a key role in organizing the event. As safety officer, she instructs all new employees on occupational health and safety issues and conducts regular training courses.

The Helmholtz Institute Freiberg uses a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant to properly dispose of the substances and chemicals used for research purposes. The pollutants are separated from the laboratory water and collected in a sludge mass. A waste disposal company recycles these materials.
