HZDR awards for outstanding achievements in 2019

At Wednesday´s ceremony of the HZDR Awards, Dr. Denys Makarov, head of Intelligent Materials and Systems Group, received the HZDR Research Award 2019, in recognition of his outstanding work in the field of magnetic sensor technology for microfluidics and augmented reality. The HZDR Doctoral Prize 2019 was awarded to Dr. Jacob König-Otto, who received his doctorate at the Institute of Ion Beam Physics and Materials Research with his dissertation on charge carrier dynamics in graphene below optical phonon energy.

In recognition of their outstanding doctoral theses, Dr. Nicola Metwasi (Institute of Radiopharmaceutical Cancer Research) and Dr. Felix Möller (Institute of Fluid Dynamics) were also honored.

With the Science Communication Award 2019, the Board of Directors distinguished Dr. Frank Stefani, Dr. André Giesecke and Dr. Tom Weier (Institute of Fluid Dynamics) for the public presentation of their research results on the synchronization model of the solar dynamo.

The first prize of the HZDR 2019 Innovation Contest was awarded to Dr. Thu Hang Lai, Dr. Rodrigo Teodoro, Dr. Magali Toussaint and Prof. Peter Brust (Institute of Radiopharmaceutical Cancer Research). They have created a new radiotracer called [18F]FLUDA that could lead to improvements in the field of differential diagnosis of Parkinson's disease.

In addition, the Board of Directors paid tribute to the best trainees, Claudia Bischoff and Janek Thode. The HZDR awards ceremony has a long-standing tradition: For many years, the center has been awarding prizes once a year to employees for their outstanding research, the best doctoral theses, remarkable inventions and a special commitment to science communication.
