Module "Radiochemistry" (Chem-Ma-M14)

Contents

The students are able to deal critically with questions about radioactivity and radiation on a scientific basis. They know the different types of radiation, their spectra, measurement and physical basics. They know why radioactivity occurs in which elements, what effects it has on humans and the environment, and how it can be applied technically. In addition, students are able to handle open radioactive materials.
The module includes the topics of radioactivity (types of radiation, nuclide map, nuclear structure, nuclear stability, transformation laws, equilibria), radioanalytics, nuclear technology and nuclear waste disposal.

Teaching Modes

The module consists of lecture (2 SWS), practical course (3 SWS) and self-study.
The language of the lectures is German.

Prerequisites for participation

The competences to be acquired in the module "Environmental and Actinide Chemistry" ("Umwelt und Radiochemie") are required.

Applicability

The module is one of 20 compulsory elective modules in the Master's program in Chemistry in the focus Materials Chemistry, of which modules in the amount of 20 to 30 credit points are to be chosen. In addition, the module is one of 14 compulsory elective modules in the Master's program in Chemistry in the focus Practical Application, of which modules with a total of ten credit points must be selected. The module can only be selected once in the master's program in Chemistry.

Further information about the module

Requirements for the award of credit points:

Credit points are earned if the module examination is passed. The module examination consists of a complex performance of 30 hours. The language of the examination is German or English, at the student's choice.

Credit points and grades:

Five credit points can be earned through the module. The module grade corresponds to the grade of the examination performance.

Frequency of the module:

The module is offered every summer semester.

Workload:

The workload is 150 working hours.

Duration of the module:

The module comprises one semester.

Information about the practical course

The mandatory instruction before the start of the practicum will take place at 10:00 on 06.07.2023 at the TU Dresden (in the last lecture hour).

The registration for the oral exam and the internship at the HZDR is done by Bettina Theuner.

The practicum belonging to the module will take place from 21.08.-25.08.2023 at the TUD and from 28.08.-01.09.2023 at the HZDR.

You will receive the access data to the internship materials in the lecture or seminar.
