International Workshop on

Advanced Techniques in Actinide Spectroscopy (ATAS)

05.–07.11.2012, Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf e.V., Germany

Review

ATAS 2012 was sucessful, productive and enjoyable. We received 73 registrations. Most of the participants came from Germany, but also from France, US, Japan, Sweden, China, Spain, Australia, Finland, Ireland and Switzerland. One third were young scientist (PhD students and young Postdocs). Eight young academics received an ATAS Travel Grant, providing financial support for workshop fee, travelling and hotel upon sending their application to the science advisory board.

In summary, 48 abstracts were submitted to the international advisory board. Different topics of up-to-date actinide spectroscopy were covered, including new techniques of NMR, vibrational, luminescence, and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Basic questions on applicability, sampling, and comparability between different methods but also applications in engineering and environmental sciences were discussed. Scientific highlights were the invited talks and in particular many talks of young scientists.

Furthermore, a "Best Poster Award" should encourage in particular young scientists to present their scientific highlights. Dr. S. Amayri (Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz) and R. Husar (HZDR) were awarded by the workshop participants.
