HIF Quick Infos


Established

The Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF) was founded on August 29th, 2011 in the context of the German Government´s Raw Materials Strategy(1) and by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research(2). It is the national institute for research into metalliferous and mineral raw materials.

Strategic partnership

The HIF is part of HZDR and collaborates closely with TU Bergakademie Freiberg(3). The HZDR is a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres(4), the largest research association in Germany.

Helmholtz Institutes(5), such as the HIF, form a special partnership between Helmholtz Centres and universities. It is the basis for a lasting cooperation in specific fields of research important to both institutions.

Mission

We are a key enabler for a sustainable Circular Economy of minerals and metals.

Director

Founding director and current director is Prof Jens Gutzmer (PhD/ZA).

Staff

More than 150 staff members from around 30 different countries.
