The Institutes of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf

The scientific branch of the HZDR is comprised into ten institutes, which you can find in the following overview.

All institutes and research departments receive scientific and technical support from two central departments: Research Technology and Information Services and Computing.

Dresden High Magnetic Field Laboratory HLD

This laboratory focuses on modern materials research in high magnetic fields. In particular, electronic properties of metallic, semiconducting, superconducting, and magnetic materials are investigated. This way the High Magnetic Field Laboratory serves as a research facility for both in-house and user projects.

Institute of Fluid Dynamics

The institute conducts basic and applied research in the fields of thermo-fluid dynamics and magnetohydrodynamics. The goal is to improve the sustainability, the energy efficiency and the safety of industrial processes.

Institute of Ion Beam Physics and Material­s Research

This institute conducts materials research for future applications, e. g. in information technology and for energy conversion. To this end use is made of the various possibilities offered by the Ion Beam Center (IBC) for synthesis, modification, and analysis of thin films and nanostructures.

Institute of Radiation Physics

Basic research in accelerator, nuclear, hadron and laser physics is this institute's top-priority. The Institute of Radiation Physics is also engaged in new ways of producing radiation and particle beams, and new detectors and measurement techniques for application to cancer research, nuclear safety and advanced materials.

Institute of Radio­pharma­ceutical Cancer Research

The institute's goal is the development of radioactively labeled substances that can be used for diagnosing and treating cancer. For this, small molecules, peptides and macromolecules, including antibodies and their derivatives, are being investigated. The key tasks of the interdisciplinary groups--biology, (radio)chemistry and immunology--range from fundamental research through to the routine production of radiopharmaceuticals for hospitals. Further focus lies on improving the detection and analysis of tomographic data.

Institute of Radiooncology – OncoRay

HZDR scientists aim to improve cure of cancer through biologically individualized and technologically optimized radiotherapy. Focus and strategy--to bridge the gap between research and clinical application--have been defined in response to the high demand for pre-clinical and clinical translational research in this area. The institute collaborates closely with the OncoRay center.

Institute of Resource Ecology

The Institute of Resource Ecology performs research to protect humans and the environment from hazards caused by pollutants resulting from technical processes that produce energy and raw materials.

Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology

The HIF – an HZDR institute located in Freiberg – strives to develop innovative technologies for the economy so that mineral and metalliferous raw materials can be made available and used more efficiently and recycled in an environmentally friendly manner.

CASUS - Cen­ter for Advanced Systems Understanding

CASUS is a center for digital interdisciplinary systems research in Görlitz. CASUS scientists research and develop the latest and most innovative methods from mathematics, modelling, simulation, data and computer science to solve questions from such diverse areas of systems research as earth system research, systems biology or materials research.

Institute of Theoretical Physics

The theoretical physicists of this institute drive basic research on non-equilibrium phenomena at HZDR. Key aspects are quantum effects in extremely strong laser fields, strongly correlated systems and graphene, as well as analogies to black holes and the early universe.

Department of Research Technology

Our activities cover mechanical, electronical or software-technical developments for scientific experiments. We support you from conception to commissioning, ranging from dedicated devices up to large research facilities.

Department of Information Services and Computing

The Central Department of Information Services and Computing is the service, competence and coordination centre for the entire IT of all HZDR locations. It operates the Infrastructure (data centres and networks), the Scientific Library, the Application and User Services and supports the scientists in the field of Computational Science.
