Power and heat from previously untapped energy: Helmholtz young investigator group studies supercritical carbon dioxide cycles

The utilization of waste heat from industrial processes is a significant opportunity for energy efficiency that is currently underutilized. At the same time, renewable energy systems based on wind and solar power must be able to respond to fluctuations in energy supply and demand. A new research group at the HZDR is exploring how supercritical carbon dioxide could be used to address these challenges. Led by Dr. Riley Barta, the group starts in October 2026, with a five-year project total budget of 1.75 million euros: one million from a Helmholtz Association funding program, 750,000 euros from HZDR itself.
