Radiometric density measurement in low-density media
The radiometric measurement of small density is preferably carried out with a soft beta radiation. In thick metallic components the measurement can not be done, because the radiation is completely absorbed in the walls.
A new type of density measurement is based on the measurement of the range of positrons in the measured medium. Positrons have the advantage that their annihilation radiation (511 keV gamma) can penetrate thicker metal walls.
A positron emitter is coupled at the side of the measuring medium. The spread is monitored by several detectors, connected in coincidence, which register the annihilation radiation. The sensitivity is the same as when using beta radiation.
