HZDR Research Sites
In addition to its headquarters in Dresden, the HZDR operates five other research sites: Grenoble, Freiberg, Görlitz, Leipzig and Schenefeld near Hamburg. The HZDR Institute for Radiooncology - OncoRay - is located on the University Hospital Dresden campus.
The Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology was founded in 2011, belongs to Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf and is cooperating closely with TU Bergakademie Freiberg.

Scientists in Freiberg and Dresden pursue the objective of developing innovative technologies for the economy so that mineral and metalliferous raw materials can be made available and used more efficiently and recycled in an environmentally friendly manner.

The Research Site Leipzig is operated by scientists working at the Institutes of Resource Ecology and Radiopharmaceutical Cancer Research.

The HZDR scientists in Leipzig investigate the transport of (toxic) substances in geological systems and also neurotracers for diagnosing and treating cancer-related cognitive defects.

The HZDR inaugurated the Helmholtz International Beamline for Extreme Fields (HIBEF) at the European XFEL in Schenefeld, near Hamburg, on August 31, 2021.

Under the leadership of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) in cooperation with the Hamburg research Centre DESY, HIBEF pools equipment and expertise from various research institutions to make them available to the international scientific community. The beamline is part of the High Energy Density (HED) experimental station at the X-ray laser European XFEL, enabling deep insights into the structure of materials and hyper-fast natural plasma-physical processes. This will help researchers drive innovation in materials and accelerator research, for example, thanks to improved models of planet formation and simulations of processes in plasma.

HZDR staff operates the Rossendorf Beamline at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France. Four experimental stations for radiochemical experiments are available.

CASUS - Center for Advanced Systems Understanding

The HZDR institute CASUS is an internationally visible centre for data-intensive systems research in Görlitz. The interdisciplinary and transnational research focuses on the latest and most innovative methods from mathematics, modelling, simulation, data and computer science to solve questions from such diverse areas of systems research as earth system research, systems biology or materials research.
