525. Wilhelm und Else Heraeus-Seminar
"Nuclear Physics Data for the Transmutation of Nuclear Waste"
February 25-27, 2013
Bad Honnef, Germany
Scope
Electricity production through nuclear power plants while having the merit of very low green-house gas emissions has caused the formation of spent nuclear fuel which is the main source of highly radioactive waste. Partitioning and Transmutation of spent nuclear fuel could be a future technology that could significantly reduce the radiotoxicity, the heat production and the volumes of the waste and thus reduce the burden on a final storage .
The transmutation of long-lived actinides into shorter lived nuclides is most efficient with the use of fast neutrons in the Mega-electron volt range. The nuclear data base for reactions with fast neutrons is a fundamental ingredient for the development of transmutation technology, as e.g. accelerator driven system (ADS).
The seminar will bring together international scientists working on the relevant nuclear data and reactions and on the nuclear engineering and design of transmutation facilities. The basic scientific concepts of nuclear data measurements and theory will be presented together with the development of transmutation technologies. The most important European developments in these fields will be presented by renowned lecturers.
Especially the young scientist involved will have an opportunity to understand how fundamental nuclear data influence the potential of nuclear transmutation. The seminar will introduce basic scientific concepts, will identify the international views on state-of-the-art of science and technology and will underline the main future options and challenges together with possible strategies towards a successful implementation of this technology. Nuclear reaction studies relevant to transmutation of the TRAKULA project (BMBF "Energie 2020+" 02NUK13) will be presented.
The involvement of young scientists will be essential in the seminar. Dedicated poster sessions are planned for the presentation of their work include brief oral presentations of the most important results and problems. "Best Poster Awards" will be assigned.
This seminar is kindly supported by the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation.
