Research at the Institute of Radiooncology – OncoRay

Approximately half of all cancer patients are given radiation therapy at some stage in their treatment which means that improvements in radiation oncology therapy benefit a large number of cancer patients. In order to make the greatest possible progress in this area, scientists at the Institute for Radiation Oncology – OncoRay cooperate across disciplines and institutions with scientists and physicians at Carl Gustav Carus University Hospital Dresden and Carl Gustav Carus Medical Faculty at TU Dresden. For the development of new technologies and treatment approaches, the collaboration with the Institute of Radiation Physics and the Institute of Radiopharmaceutical Cancer Research plays an important role, too.

The focus of activities is translational research, which looks to ensure that lab results reach the patient as quickly as possible. The scientists thus get together with physicians from the Department of Radiotherapy and Radiation Oncology at Dresden University Hospital to conduct a host of clinical studies examining promising research results. Often, other hospitals, research groups and industrial partners are also involved at both national and international level.
