iCross: Integrity of nuclear waste repository systems - Cross-scale system understanding and analysis

Short Project Description:
The interdisciplinary project "iCross" bundles research and development expertise in the Helmholtz Association on the subjects of radiochemistry, geosciences, life sciences and numerical simulations of environmental systems in a cross-research project. Processes that have not been fully understood from the molecular to the regional scale are examined, evaluated and described. The aim is to plan and carry out laboratory experiments, to derive parameters and to model relevant processes across scales using advanced simulation methods (that require several numerical upscaling treatments). The simulations are validated experimentally, partly in underground laboratories. The focus here is on work in the Mt. Terri rock laboratory (CH; Opalinus clay), where a new test tunnel is being excavated with the strong participation of German partners. Further investigations take place in the Grimsel rock laboratory (CH; crystalline rock). The work focuses on host rocks (crystalline and clay), which were not the major focus of German repository research in the past.

- Studies on the sorption of Eu (III) and Cm (III) on crystalline rock and Opalinus clay (sandy facies): sample surfaces using spatially resolved interferometry, autoradiography, Raman microscopy and µTRLFS measurements
- Development of isothermal titration calorimetry for sorption processes
- Investigation of the quantitative influence of radiation-induced lattice defects and subsequent crystal surface development on radionuclide sorption
- Analysis of the microbial diversity and activity in clay rock and bentonite
- Studies on the interaction of clay-rock-relevant microorganisms with radionuclides
- Investigation of the microbial influence on the corrosion of container materials as cast iron and copper
- Investigation of radionuclide sorption at chemically disturbed and microbiologically modified barrier interfaces, e.g. Steel bentonite interface
- Pore-scale reactive transport modeling and simulation, including surface complexation modeling (SCM), parameterized and validated by laboratory experiments
- Core-scale reactive diffusion modeling and simulation based on positron emission tomography (PET) parametrization
- Implementation of the smart Kd concept in OpenGeoSys (OGS) and development of a simple test case as a benchmark for reactive transport simulations
