Continuous exchange with politicians
Anyone who has followed the news on the HZDR homepage in recent months will have noticed that there have been frequent reports of visits by politicians. This is no coincidence, but in line with the Board's concern to expand political communication at HZDR. "Our main goal is to engage in dialog with members of parliament, to establish and extend sustainable contacts with politicians, and to increase their awareness of our concerns," summarizes the Scientific Director, Prof. Sebastian M. Schmidt. More

Getting ready for university teaching
Teaching is a skill that needs to be learned – this is especially true for scientists who work at non-university institutions and are facing the challenge of taking over a seminar or lecture in higher education. The Center for Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching (ZiLL) at TU Dresden has created the “Teaching Synergies Program” for just these situations. HZDR's Dr. Claudia Arndt was the first participant to successfully complete the program. More

Detective work in chemistry
Our author meets Dr. Robert Gericke not in the lab, but in the office. And she notices right away that he would actually much rather talk about his projects in his usual working environment – the lab. Since the beginning of 2021, the chemist has been working as a High Potential at the Institute of Resource Ecology and spends a large part of his working hours in the radiation safety area at experimental boxes, microscopes and large-scale equipment. In each of his sentences, you can sense his passion about his work. More

Interview with Prof. Willi Xylander
What is living in ponds and small rivers? At the end of July, young explorers pursued this question at the Dresden-Rossendorf research campus. During the "Summer of Science", the free vacation program of the DeltaX School Lab, they literally took a close look at the waters on site to discover organisms. Prof. Willi Xylander supported them with a great deal of expertise and passion. The director of the Senckenberg Museum für Naturkunde Görlitz explains in an interview why he led the course for the second time and what other forms of cooperation with the HZDR are possible. More

Dependence on the raw material lithium?
Due to the boom in electric cars, the demand for raw materials needed for battery production is growing – above all lithium, which is imported from countries such as Australia or Chile. Will European companies become dependent? "No," says Dr. Jens Gutzmer of the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology in an interview with MDR. Europe has enough raw materials for its own needs. Also, the Erzgebirge in Saxony has the potential for lithium production.
