Numerical Simulation of a plunging jet into a water basin

Multiphase flows are of high importance for the analysis and optimization of manifold processes in chemical and process engineering as well as in power generation. Those mixture flows of different fluids are characterized by high dynamics, very complex physical processes, especially at the phase boundaries, and a large range of scales. Due to this, the numerical simulation, i.e. the representation of processes in a computer, is very demanding and requires specifically developed models. It is still far from being possible to reliably predict all physical phenomena. The video shows exemplarily the results of such a numerical simulation with a morphology-adaptive multifield two-fluid model, which is developed specifically for the simulation of technical applications and to answer engineering questions. The morphology-adaptive multifield two-fluid model is characterized by considering both resolved and statistically modeled, small-scale interfaces to increase the predictive power of simulation methods.
