Helmholtz Innovation Labs at the HZDR

Since the beginning of 2020, independent research and development units have been set up at the HZDR in close cooperation with companies and other scientific institutions in three so-called Innovation Labs. The HZDR is thus expanding its opportunities to test new technologies and fields of application and make them usable for industry. The Helmholtz Innovation Labs are "enabling spaces" funded by the Helmholtz Association in which scientific expertise is brought together with the needs of industry and ideas are tested for their practicality in joint development projects.

The BlitzLab is dedicated to the ultrashort thermal treatment of materials with flash lamp and laser annealing. The technology, which exposes materials to very high temperatures for nanoseconds to milliseconds, promises massive energy savings and the creation of new material structures. BlitzLab offers its cooperation partners access to an annealing laboratory with several flash lamp and laser facilities and - in collaboration with the Institute of Ion Beam Physics and Materials Research -  to many other methods of material treatment and material analysis. The Lab focuses on new materials and processes for the application areas of electronics and printed electronics (functional semiconductor layers), sensors and photovoltaics as well as energy storage materials and technologies.

CLEWATEC stands for CLean WAter TEChnology Lab and is concerned with novel and sustainable technologies for flexible and resource-saving wastewater treatment. The focus is on the recovery of valuable resources from the wastewater, modern measurement and analysis techniques, and the energy efficiency of all processes. CLEWATEC is an interface between research and industry, where new ideas for sustainable water treatment are continuously tested and developed into technological applications. As part of the HZDR, CLEWATEC is located in the Department of Experimental Thermofluid Dynamics at the Institute of Fluid Dynamics. Together with partners from industry and research, the Clean Water Technology Lab identifies the needs of the wastewater industry and promotes knowledge transfer along the innovation chain.

FlexiSens focuses on the development and application of a flexible and printable magnetic field sensors for Hall effect and magneto-resistive effects. This novel high-performance magnetic field sensors were developed on ultra-thin flexible substrates that have a high mechanical adaptability. Due to their extremely thin and unconventional mechanical properties, flexible and printed sensors can be used not only on various flat, but also curved objects. Our technology enables new fields of application, for example as wearable electronics on the skin, as smart implants in medicine or for monitoring movements in large glass or roof structures. FlexiSens is located at the Institute of Ion Beam Physics and Materials Research in the Department of Intelligent Materials and Systems.
