Annual Report 2009
of the Research Center Forschungszentrum Dresden-Rossendorf
Preface
On June 22, 2009, the Federal Minister for Research, Prof. Annette Schavan, and the Prime Minister of Saxony, Stanislaw Tillich, signed an agreement regulating the transfer of the FZD to the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers, which is scheduled for January 1, 2011. The transfer dates back to a recommendation of the German Wissenschaftsrat and the FZD has since been preparing for this. As a member of the Helmholtz Association the FZD will still be engaged in materials research, cancer research and nuclear safety research, even though it will put a focus on exploring matter under extreme conditions.
This is a reason why materials research at the FZD is strengthened in the years to come by three large scientific projects which are, at the same time, targeted to form close networks with the other two FZD research programs. The last year saw an intense preparation of these projects, which are generously supported by the Free State of Saxony via a cabinet decision on May 26, 2009.
The investment funds will be used to create a center for high-power radiation sources by extension of the radiation source ELBE building, to enlarge the High Magnetic Field Laboratory and for building a new lab for experiments with liquid metals. The money will also be spent for renovation works at the FZD’s new research site in Leipzig, which was integrated into the FZD on January 1, 2010. As you can see, there are quite a few changes going on at the FZD, which, however, would not be possible without the commitment of our staff as well as the support given by our funding authorities. We seize the chance to thank everyone for their work!
The following pages of our annual online report give you an overview of further important events during the last year, significant results of research, awards received by FZD staff and other personnel matters, information on our junior staff working in the scientific and non-scientific area as well as up-to-date facts and figures about the FZD.
