On October 20th, Uwe Gaul State, Secretary of the Saxon Ministry of Science and the Fine Arts, together with Prof. Dr. Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht, Rector of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, officially inaugurated the EIT RawMaterials – Regional Center Freiberg. The Regional Center Freiberg is to assist Freiberg’s scientific institutions with networking across the region as well as supporting the academic education within the raw materials sector.
Raw materials and the sustainable usage thereof are crucial issues for Germany as an industrial nation. This not only applies to the education sector but is equally important for industry as well as politics. “Thanks to the EIT RawMaterials – Regional Center Freiberg, we can boost the regional networking within the raw materials field to a new level. Together with the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, we pool together our competencies and create valuable synergies within research and academia. The education and training of experts in the raw materials sector, as well as the support of training and further education of foreign experts as well as top-level management in the resource sector are very important topics”, explains Rector Prof. Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht.
The Regional Center Freiberg, a jointly managed office of TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF) part of Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, and the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), has been operational since September 2015. Its main assignment is centralized information gathering and consultation of; the university’s faculties and offices, the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology, regional trade associations as well as individual companies. Currently, the TU Bergakademie Freiberg is involved in 20 current projects supported by the EIT RawMaterials, the Helmholtz Institute participates in six projects.
The office is managed by 2 professors of the university. Respectively, Prof. Dr. Urs Peuker, Director of the Institute of Mechanical Process Engineering and Mineral Processing and Prof. Jens Gutzmer, professor and head of the research group in economic geology and petrology at the Department of Mineralogy as well as founding director of the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology.
“The Regional Center Freiberg has been established by the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and the Helmholtz Institute as a central contact point in the resource sector. It is open to all research fellows of both institutions who wish to apply for project funds within the European resource network of EIT RawMaterials. This is a very important task as the project funding via the EIT differentiates greatly from other funding programs – it aims at implementing innovations in the European industry”, Prof. Gutzmer explains.
“The EIT RawMaterials offers the unique chance to professionally address the internationalization process for our resource university. The university is included in a top-level network of notable European partners within the EIT RawMaterials. Thanks to the financial and operational support of the EIT, it will be possible to offer, with our participation and support, additional excellent international study programs including trainings and courses for further education”, summarizes Prof. Peuker.
