In recognition of her outstanding research achievements, Dr. Alina Deac from the Dresden High Magnetic Field Laboratory at HZDR was named a member of AcademiaNet. The Romanian-born physicist is given her own profile in the international database for excellent female researchers, which aims to ensure equal opportunities for women in science. The database is intended to make it easier for decision-makers to staff scientific committees with proven female experts or to identify female candidates for appointment procedures and awards.

“This is a nice surprise for me because, to be honest, I knew nothing at all about my nomination”, says Alina Deac, delighted about the award. “Women are very much in the minority in physics and a database like this can help increase their visibility. In addition, membership in this network can also facilitate making contacts and learn more about research funding opportunities that I am less aware of. We have previously been successful with lobbying for the new EU framework program Horizon Europe to include funding specifically for spintronics for the first time. I would like to use this opportunity as best as I can and perhaps we can promote this field to other funding agencies.”

AcademiaNet is managed by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The Helmholtz Association is one of the initiative’s partner organizations. The database currently contains profiles of about 3,200 female scientists.

Alina Deac studied physics at the Universities of Cluj-Napoca (Romania) and Grenoble (France), where she also received her PhD in 2005. After research stays at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology in Tsukuba (Japan), the National Institute for Standards and Technology (USA), the Jülich Research Centre, and the École Polytechnique Fédérale in Lausanne (Switzerland), she came to the HZDR in 2011. Now she is group leader of the Spintronics Division in the Dresden High Magnetic Field Laboratory. Her research interests include applications for wireless communication in the terahertz range, which play an important role for the future mobile communication standard 6G. More recently, she decided to focus on cryomagnetic storage media for quantum technologies.
