3D tour through the magnetic labyrinth
Virtual tour offers insights into the Dresden High Magnetic Field Laboratory
The Dresden High Magnetic Field Laboratory (HLD) at the HZDR is the place to be for anyone who wants to explore the secrets and potential of the highest magnetic fields, which are used, for example, in the development of innovative materials or the investigation of exotic states of matter. However, physical access for visitors is limited due to its function as an experimental laboratory. Now there is an opportunity to get up close and personal without even having to set foot outside the own door.
Scientists from all over the world come together at the HLD to work on innovative projects. Here, extremely strong magnetic fields are used to research the properties of materials that can be used to develop and to implement important new technologies. The HLD team has now published a virtual tour of the laboratory, which provides an insight into the exciting world of research with extremely high magnetic fields.
From the laboratories to the pulsed-field facilities and the large capacitor hall, visitors to the tour can interactively find out about the research being carried out at the Dresden High Magnetic Field Laboratory. For example, you can follow how a coil for the highest magnetic fields is built. Further, the scientists at the HLD provide insights into their current research projects and their day-to-day work in short videos. Popular demonstration experiments can also be seen on video for the first time, such as the "flying frying pan".
The tour is aimed at physics enthusiasts of all ages who want to find out more and gain an impression of the topics and processes at an international research facility. The virtual tour will also be presented to the public during upcoming major events, such as the Dresden Long Night of Science.
The virtual tour can now be viewed on the website of the Dresden High Magnetic Field Laboratory or at https://www.hzdr.de/app/hld360/ on a PC, tablet or smartphone.
