Research in the Materials Theory group (Dept. of Materials D-MATL) headed by Prof. Dr. Nicola Spaldin uses a combination of first-principles and phenomenological theoretical techniques to study the fundamental physics of novel materials that have potential technological importance. Projects combine development of new theoretical methods, application of the methods to existing materials, design of new materials with specific functionalities and subsequent synthesis of the "designer materials". Specific materials classes of interest are transition-metal-oxides with "strong correlations", contra-indicated multifunctional materials, multiferroics, materials with multiple coupled or competing instabilities. The partners at ETHZ contribute with their competences and infrastructures on:

  • Calculation of structure and properties of functional materials
  • First-principles design of new materials with specific functionalities
  • Oxide single-crystal growth

The research group Infrared Spectroscopy of Novel Electronic and Magnetic Materials led by Prof. Dr. Dimitri Basov employs infrared spectroscopy to investigate new phenomena of novel electronic and magnetic materials. “Infrared” here is used colloquially since in fact the instruments allow to cover much broader frequency range extending continuously from sub-THz to UV light. Current research directions include:
