HIF Quick Infos
Established
The Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF) was founded on August 29th, 2011 in the context of the German Government´s Raw Materials Strategy and by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. It is the national institute for research into metalliferous and mineral raw materials.
Strategic partnership
The German federal government’s national raw materials strategy called for “the establishment of a research institute focused on the sustainable and secure supply of raw materials, to be located in the new federal states.” The Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf and the TU Bergakademie Freiberg developed a plan to establish a research facility in Freiberg dedicated to ensuring a sustainable and secure supply of raw materials for Germany. As a result, the HIF was founded in 2011 and has been working closely with the TU Bergakademie Freiberg ever since.
Helmholtz Institutes, such as the HIF, form a special partnership between Helmholtz Centers and universities. It is the basis for a lasting cooperation in specific fields of research important to both institutions.
