Special commitment and outstanding achievements of our employees deserve additional recognition. For this reason, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) bestows the following awards every year:
- HZDR Research Award
- HZDR Technology Award
- HZDR Transfer Award
- HZDR Doctoral Award
- HZDR Communications Award
The Board of Directors handed over the awards at a ceremony in the main lecture hall on June 5, 2025.

Research Award
... to Dr. Tobias Dornheim, Dr. Maximilian Böhme, Dr. Zhandos Moldabekov (Center for Advanced Systems Understanding – CASUS) and Dr. Jan Vorberger (Institute of Radiation Physics) for the development of a new method for measuring the properties of warm dense matter. Warm dense matter can be found in many places in space and is expected to have useful applications on Earth. However, the extreme temperatures and pressures involved present significant challenges for experiments. The researchers have succeeded in demonstrating a mathematical solution that can be used to precisely determine the temperature of this state of matter.
Technology Award
... to Dr. Rui Xu, Dr. Denys Makarov, Dr. Tetiana Voitsekhivska and Lin Guo (Institute of Ion Beam Physics and Materials Research) for the development and transfer of an HZDR-patented, transparent and biocompatible polymer technology for medical prostheses to operate the touchscreens of cell phones and other mobile devices.
Transfer Award
... to Dr. Richard Gloaguen, Christian Christesen, Dr. Isabel Cecillia Contreras Acosta, Dr. Laura Tusa and Dr. Sandra Lorenz (Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology and TheiaX GmbH) for the development of non-invasive exploration methods with highly sensitive hyperspectral cameras for the sustainable exploration of raw material deposits and the successful commercial application of the know-how. Founded in 2021, TheiaX GmbH is profitable and has positioned itself prominently in the market for exploration services.
Doctoral Awards
... to Dr. Satayam Kar (Institute of Ion Beam Physics and Materials Research) for his doctoral thesis Size Effects in Epitaxially Grown Ni-Mn-Ga-based Films
... to Dr. Stephan Hilpmann (Institute of Resource Ecology) for his doctoral thesis Wechselwirkung eines tongesteinsrelevanten Mikroorganismus mit Uran und Europium
... to Dr. Santiago Andrés Brühlmann (Institute of Radiopharmaceutical Cancer Research) for his doctoral thesis Process Engineering and Radiochemical Development of the Cyclotron-based Production of Theranostic Radiometals
Communications Award
... to Dr. Max Sieger (Institute of Fluid Dynamics) for his supervision of student internships at the HZDR and active advertising at schools to promote interest in scientific and technical education. The communication prize was donated by the Sponsors' Association of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) e. V. for the first time this year.
