Scientific and technological environment
The unique scientific environment of Dresden is propelled by the Technische Universität Dresden (TUD), the largest university of Saxony, characterized by a long tradition for academic excellence. The local outstanding cluster of academic research institutions includes 3 Max Planck Institutes, 2 Leibniz Institutes, 12 Fraunhofer Institutes, and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf. Synergies in research and education between the TUD and the research institutions in Dresden are further developed and used by the founded alliance DRESDEN-concept (Dresden Research and Education Synergies for the Development of Excellence and Novelty).
The Dresden region hosts Europe’s largest microelectronics cluster concentrating commercial enterprises in a variety of fields including micro-, nano- and organic electronics. The collaboration between companies and research institutions is fostered by initiatives such as the leading-edge cluster Cool Silicon and the network of microelectronics industry Silicon Saxony.
The strong research activities in micro and nanoelectronics, materials and natural sciences, and electronic systems at the TU Dresden and its DRESDEN-concept partners have brought together more than 55 outstanding researchers in the University Research Cluster "Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden" (cfAED) to address the advancement of electronic information processing systems.
