Overview of existing Knowledge Management Systems (KMSs) in Radioactive Waste Management (RWM) field in European Union (EU)

The Institute of Resource Ecology (IRE) of HZDR hosted the virtual international workshop on “Overview of existing Knowledge Management Systems (KMSs) in Radioactive Waste Management (RWM) field in European Union (EU)” in frame of the European Joint Programme on Radioactive Waste Management (EURAD) on 30 November 2021. The workshop was organized in the context of the implementation the Task 1 within EURAD WP 11 (State-of-Knowledge)  and aimed to define the set of specific elements of functionality required to create an interactive, easy to use and maintain sustainable KMS in RWM. WP11 represented by HZDR by Prof. Vinzenz Brendler, Dr. Dinara Abbasova, Dr. Thuro Arnold and Dr. Carola Franzen.

24 representatives from 14 International Organizations and invited experts from International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA/OECD) took part in the workshop.

Run by again the EURAD VISION is “A step change in European collaboration towards safe radioactive waste management (RWM), including disposal, through the development of a robust and sustained science, technology and knowledge management programme that supports timely implementation of RWM activities and serves to foster mutual understanding and trust between Joint Programme participants.”

Accordingly, EURAD KM VISION says: “It is essential to implement an efficient and integrated Knowledge Management programme at the EU level in order to establish, capitalize and transfer the state of scientific and technical knowledge in the field of RWM.”

To this end, presentation of the screening results and review of used KM systems, its tools & methods, as well as a lesson learnt, and practices known in nowadays in the RWM field, was delivered by Dr. Dinara Abbasova. In addition, participants were provided with an overview of the EURAD Roadmap and KM vision. Participants intensively discussed presented information and for future activities. High demand in close cooperation of EURAD WP 11 with IAEA and NEA has been once more highlighted.

How mentioned Mr. Ashok GANESAN, the Knowledge Management Officer in NE, IAEA, "the number and diversity of IT tools involved to knowledge management have significantly increased over the years. Consequently, there has been a growing need in RWM organizations for the EURAD to provide coordinated activity on sustainable knowledge preservation and unique system for the advice on knowledge preservation in RWM in Europe."

The future plans have been announced.
