Guideline to utilization

HZDR Exploitation Guideline

Basic understanding and Goals

In order to fulfil its societal mission and its purpose, it is one of HZDR’s aims to transfer its research results in the best possible way to business and society. By actively applying our research findings, we are making a valuable contribution to the future of our economy and society. For its transfer, HZDR uses all possible options. These include publications, lectures, further education, personnel transfer, cooperations, contract research, licensing and spin-offs. For each transfer project, an individual case evaluation of the most favourable option is made. The main criteria are the societal benefit or the increase in prosperity; in the case of the transfer to the economy, in particular, the attainable value added in Germany. In the event of a successful exploitation, HZDR has to participate in fairness financial wise. This is carried out by licensing of the technologies and taking shares in spin-offs.

Intellectual Property Rights

Industrial property rights, in particular patents, form the basis for the successful exploitation of technologies and the success of the HZDR. Intellectual property rights also strengthen the ability to attract third-party funding for research. The HZDR therefore builds up a protective portfolio of rights in its main research areas.

Exploitation rules for cooperation contracts and contract research

The HZDR makes fair and partnership-based arrangements in third-party contracts with third parties. It must be ensured that the research results are exploited as widely as possible and thus the greatest possible social benefits are achieved. As a rule, non-exclusive licenses are granted in the case of cooperations. In the case of a partner’s exploitation success based on HZDR research results, HZDR has to participate financially in an appropriate manner.

Spin-offs and shareholdings

Spin-offs are a suitable means of exploitation. The HZDR supports spin-offs in the pre- and early post-start phase according to the spin-off and participation guidelines of the BMBF. In screenings, potential-rich ideas are selected at HZDR and transferred to a spin-off state by active business development. In advanced development phases, the possibilities for the development of new business areas under the umbrella of HZDR Innovation GmbH are exploited. The scope of support depends on the strategic importance of the spin-off for the HZDR and the growth potential. In the case of spin-offs, taking shares – parallel to licensing – is examined on a case by case basis.
