The research topics of work group covers both the static magnetic properties (e.g. magnetization, anisotropy, coercivity, interlayer exchange coupling) as well as dynamic properties like, linewidth and precessional damping effects, spin-torque effects, etc.

The investigations are caried out using ferromagnetic resonance (FMR), magnetooptical Kerr effect (MOKE), and SQUID magnetometry. Details of the setups can be found here.

Magnetization Dynamics of an Individual Single‐Crystalline Fe‐Filled Carbon Nanotube

Micromanipulation eines FeCNT in einen Mikroresonator ©Copyright: Dr. Lenz, Kilian

The magnetization dynamics of a single crystalline Fe‐filled multiwall carbon nanotube (FeCNT) are investigated by microresonator ferromagnetic resonance and Brillouin light scattering. Using a focused ion beam the initial FeCNT is successively shortened to obtain a single‐crystalline Fe wire. The cubic anisotropy and very narrow linewidth prove the high quality of the Fe nanowires.

Spin-wave modes in transition from a thin film to a full magnonic crystal

Multistep Etching Teaser from PRB ©Copyright: Manuel Langer

Standing spin waves in thin films with a tiny periodic surface modulation are quantized in such a way that a multiple of their wavelength fits into one modulation period. This paper tackles the question how these film modes evolve into modes in a one-dimensional magnonic crystal consisting of periodic individual wire structures. By sequentially increasing the surface modulation and subsequent dynamic characterization of the same sample, simple transition rules are found connecting the modes of both systems with one another.
